Stayed last night in North Yallourne with a view of their noisy power station. Just left Traralgon pub celebrating two years without being in a car. Sale tomorrow I hope.
Tonight I'm camped a short way from a dream I described once on a crossroads with a house ruin. Pretty close to my image, will photo in the morning, this experience is cool but a bit strange :)
Letter :
Today is a day I've been striving for over the last few months. The last time I was in a moving car was two years ago yesterday. I'm celebrating with an irish whiskey or two in a Traralgon Pub.
When I left Moe yesterday I discovered a rail trail to Yallourne. It took me off the Princess Highway to the banks of the Latrobe river. The power station was quite noisy as it echoed through the sleepy township that night. It seems to be a town in decline yet still clinging to it's brown coal mining heritage.
After walking about 150km my small toe has decided it's time to get a small blister. While it's only slightly uncomfortable, it's not going to be rested and will take time to recover. I would be disappointed if a sore small toe kept me from walking. I guess sometimes it's the little things that can make a big difference.
As I sit here and recall the time I've spent walking and not in cars, I remember the temptations, dreams and the attitudes that made it work. Often in dreams I'd find myself in a car, wondering how I came to be there and how I'd had such a good run until then. The only times I was ever really tempted to get a lift were when pretty girls were offering! I felt a bit silly when I turned those particular lifts down, but by forcing this habit upon myself I've generated memories and experiences that I would have never otherwise have had. It's the type of thing that impacts on many other aspects of your lifestyle; in ways that most people aren't aware of.
The towns are getting fewer and further between now. I hope to reach Sale tomorrow which will mark one tenth of my trip's distance. If I make it by lunch I'll be on target for reaching Brisbane in ten weeks, whatever that date might be. We'll see eh.
Swaggie
