After resting on my birthday yesterday I decided today I just wanted to go to Moe. Made it easily so I headed out and discovered a rail trail to some place starting with Y.??? It's the right direction so I'll see where it takes me....
Letter : 27th February
Today I'm resting at Claire and Gaz's organic farm in Elinbank. There's a storm hanging around, grumbling and down-pouring at intervals. They're appreciating this rain here, and with a roof over my head, so am I. With this rest-break I've had a chance to reflect on how my walk's been going.
At first I thought the distances I could achieve in a day would be dictated by how my feet felt, but they've been going so well in the boots I have, it's my tired legs that have told me when the day's walking is done. Travelling over 30km a day has been surprisingly more than I expected at the beginning.
Today was a very helpful rest day in which every little ache or stiffness has a chance to recover. So far today I've walked from Elinbank to Moe. For the most part the conditions have been perfect but the road; long, flat and straight as an eye-line, but it has made me take at least one nap by a trickling creek.
The towns have been about 7-9kms apart, bite-sized distances so far. I expect this to increase soon but it's been a comfortable rhythm to have kept this far. I havn't even been thinking about Brisbane or Sydney. The day-to-day goal setting and the manageable increments have been keeping me occupied on what's at hand. perhaps that could be an oversight by those who think they couldn't do something like this. Sometimes during the toughest times all you can concentrate on is one step at a time. This applies to any of our big dreams.
There are apple trees and blackberry bushes along the way and it's tough to know when to stop eating before getting a bellyache. In my tucker bag is bread, vegemite, nuts and dried fruit. It's probably most things I need in my diet but I will crave a warm meal at some point.
Sundays in Moe are apparently a non-event. If I squint I can imagine people up and down this main street but today there's only enough to make sure it can't be declared a ghost town.
The cool breeze has been at my back today, making it delightful to walk but chilly to try and rest. It's calling me back to the Princess Highway to get a bit farther with the couple of remaining daylight hours.
I see a lot that makes me think, but I need a good long sleep to be capable of writing it well. I'm thinking about dreams, the type you aspire to in your life. Perhaps by the time I reach Brissy I'll have a stronger vision of my own dreams,
Swaggie
