26th March : This morning I woke up by a secluded bay without a soul in sight. Kiamh is a gentle coastal village; I am about to plunge through the bustle of Shellharbour's sprawling suburbia.
Letter :
I've been walking through little towns, coastal villages and rural areas where the pace and atmosphere is always manageable. Today I walked over a hill and coped an eye-ball-full of suburbia!
Why is it that so many people don't like the suburbs but so many still choose to live there? Maybe you just have to live where you're 'able'; where it's afford-ABLE, even if only just toler-ABLE.
I'm pretty sure I just walked past the street where I grew up. Can't be sure because it all looks the same. I expect much of the same until I'm well past Sydney Town.
I don't really fit in with the environment since I passed over that hill and it's possible that I stand out even more now!
In Kiama this morning I took local advice. The scenic route is picturesque but long, the Princess Highway is short but bland, so the local way is something in between. I'm good at asking for directions, even remembering directions, but following directions, I've rarely done well. So it's quite astonishing for me to have arrived at Shell Harbour on my way to Wollongong.
Off the Princess Highway it's hard to estimate distances I've travelled, but Sydney is but a few days away I reckon. There I'll force a rest day upon myself. Who am I kidding? No one, including myself has ever been completely successful at forcing me to do anything!
